For Lent

"Mrs. Christ, can you put Jesus
on the phone?"
I put Lent and New Year's Resolutions in the same basket. That may sound sacrilegious, but I know there is a huge difference between the two:  I just never have put a lot of stock in it. For a guy who isn't a Catholic, I never understood why another non-Catholic would give up soft drinks, smoking, sex, or Facebook for six weeks.  And I always thought it was funny when the same Protestants who practiced Lent would say that praying to Mother Mary was ridiculous because they could always talk directly to Jesus.

I'm not going to invite a public debate about religion. I don't want this thing looking like a Youtube comment section. So if you think you're about to start some rant about Jesus, or the Devil, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster... stop it.

What I wanted to say is that I am observing Lent this year, but, in the tradition of stolid Puritan Work Ethic, I'm not giving anything up. I've decided that I'll be writing something new every single day (and no, this blog doesn't count). My writing for The Flor-Ala doesn't count either. I've got two short stories I'm working on, along with piles of poetry. I either want to work on those, or write new things every day of Lent. I think some of it I'll post on here for popular opinion, some I'll send off to other publications, and some I'll send to The Boxcar as well.

I've always heard that you know if you're a writer because you can't stop writing. My problem is that I'm literally writing all the time, but it's very rarely things that I want to be writing. If I make my self write something for me every single day, I'll learn to balance time around that. It will be my meditation. My Zen. My drinking binge. My feast.

I just wanted to throw this idea out there. This is my first time ever observing Lent, and I want to see how it goes. Maybe a blog about it? Hmm...
